The Children’s Bookshop Events

On Saturday, August 31st at 11am come along for a special Storytime session of Margaret Mahy's story A Lion in the Meadow / He Raiona i Roto i Ngā Otaota.

After winning a giant-sized (1m x 1m) copy of this classic New Zealand story for having the best national display of the NZ children's book award finalists, we decided that we had to celebrate the occasion. This huge book features the story in both English and te reo Māori and is one of only three printed, so we feel very honoured to own a copy.

This free event will be ideal for preschoolers through to age 10 and their families. All are welcome but let us know by email (books@thechildrensbookshop.co.nz) or phone 04 387 3905 if you are coming so that we can arrange enough seating.

On Friday, September 6th from 4pm to 5pm join us for an hour of story and magic with Gareth Ward, award-winning author of The Traitor and the Thief.  Gareth will talk about his steampunk adventures, including his new book, The Clockill and the Thief, both thrilling reads for ages 10 to 14. He will also entertain with some magic tricks and anyone who saw his performance on his last visit to the shop will definitely want to return for more magical mayhem.

This is a free event. Gareth's books will be for sale and he will be happy to sign copies, both new and pre-owned.

"Write like an Author" is an internationally acclaimed writing course that teaches young writers the skills and techniques that professional authors use to create their stories. During the camp, each participant will develop and write an original creative story under the guidance of well-known author and writing coach Maria Gill.

"Draw Like an Illustrator" is our concurrent illustration course that teaches young artists the skills and techniques that professional illustrators use. The presenter is Fifi Colston.

The camps will be held at Raroa Intermediate during the school holidays, starting on Tuesday 8 October and running until Thursday 10 October 2019.

The writing camp is ideal for young people who have a dream of becoming a published author or anyone who wants to improve their writing skills. The illustration camp offers the same opportunity to young artists.
