Dear Parents and Caregivers
Our Year 8 Leaders are also planning to hold a bake sale next Wednesday 27 March at lunchtime. If you would like to contribute some baking to our bake sale, please drop it to the Office either on Tuesday or Wednesday. All proceeds will be going to the Muslim community in Christchurch.
As I described in my newsletter to the Parent Community on Sunday, should the school ever be placed into lockdown, we will endeavour to communicate with you via text and email to ensure you are informed of the ongoing situation. We will communicate directly with staff to keep them apprised of the situation and also liaise directly with the Police. We ask that parents DO NOT come to school in a lockdown situation, as this can place you in danger, and we are unable to let you into any part of the school. Staff and children can only be released by myself or Denise Johnson, our DP. This week our staff reviewed our Lockdown Procedures and will be having a school lockdown practice in Week 9.

If you would like to join us at this meeting please let us know in advance by emailing bot@stants.school.nz.
We have also put together a profile to let you know what being on our Board of Trustees involves, why it is important, and what the benefits are. You can read this profile on the St Anthony’s website or attached below.
Faith News
Baptism
Many of you would have seen the recent Signmee regarding the combined school baptism. We have decided to postpone the baptism mass until Term 3 in order to give families more time to prepare for this important sacrament. Please contact the Office if you would like to have yourselves and or your child/ren baptised in Term 3.
Children's Mass
Our Children's Mass in on Sunday 7 April at 4pm with a Family BBQ afterwards. Please mark this date in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you and your family there for this special occasion.
Faith Reflection
We have all been greatly saddened by the events in Christchurch on Friday. It is hard for us to understand when someone can choose to hurt another human being. We feel shocked, we feel confused and we feel sadness. We pray that people will stop being violent in our world and will stop destroying the homes and churches that are safe places for many people. When people choose to do wrong in our world, let us be the bearers of light. When people clench their fists in anger let out hands be open for peace and love. May God give us the strength to focus on love and support for our Muslim community.
Spotlight on St Anthony's Staff
NAME: Denise Johnson
POSITION: Tui Classroom Teacher / DP
Tell us a little about your teaching journey
I had the privilege to train at the Catholic Teachers College - Loreto Hall which was in Auckland. This training allowed me to embrace the 4 aspects of our Hauora. There are four dimensions of Hauora; Taha Tinana (Physical Wellbeing - health), Taha Hinengaro (Mental & Emotional wellbeing - self-confidence), Taha Whanau (Social Wellbeing - self-esteem) and Taha Wairua (Spiritual well being - personal beliefs) continuously in my teaching and learning - I have loved and appreciated that freedom especially when we consider such challenging times as we face today with the recent tragic events in Christchurch. I have taught at a range of schools from Taita, Petone, Island Bay, Miramar until finally coming closer to home in Seatoun at St Anthony’s.
What do you like most about your job?
I love witnessing the great pride and sense of achievement that a child, when struggling in their learning, suddenly ‘gets it‘ and they are so thrilled. We call these lightbulb moments and to me that is the most rewarding aspect of my teaching. The creation of the microchip has opened the world to us and I am loving the exciting times we are in as we embrace the digital work to enhance our learning. Teaching is an ever changing role which means I never become bored.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
‘Rome wasn’t built in a day!' As teachers we are constantly learning and enhancing our practice, which is at times overwhelming, so it is a good saying to remember. My parents always challenged me to help build community with the belief that ‘many hands make light work' and again when playing competitive sport I learnt that no one is bigger than the team. Everyone has a role to play and a successful team relies on everyone doing their bit!
If you weren’t a teacher, what other career would interest you?
I have only ever wanted to be a teacher and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
What part of your job do you find the most challenging?
The juggling act that the job demands - there is always something to do, something to learn and you have manage your time effectively.
We have recently launched a new programme for our Year 7/8 students which we hope will provide a sense of fun, wonder, improved self-worth, special character, community spirit, uniqueness, entrepreneurship – the list is endless! The St Anthony’s ARISE challenges are exciting areas of learning which we expect all Year 7 & 8 students to participate in.
The acronymn that stands for ARISE is listed below. We would like to focus on the 'I' being that the students are arising to the challenges.
I
Attitude – be the best you can be
Risk – manage and take calculated risks
I am loved by God – make Te Atua my alpha and omega
Strive – have a strong work ethic
Empathy – have the capacity to understand those I encounter – walk a mile in another’s shoes
We see these challenges as an extension of school-based learning. The students are encouraged to be intrinsically motivated and take responsibility for their own personal learning (self-management).The ARISE Challenge programme provides a significant amount of additional, meaningful and relevant community-based home learning. The categories reflect the special nature of our school learning community, are holistic and child-centred.
On Wednesday 20 March, Tui Class took part in Year 7/8 Eastern Zone Futsal at the ASB Sports Centre. The event was run by Stuart from Team Wellington and everyone had a great time. Some wonderful sportsmanship was on display and the "StAnts Superstars" team got to the final of the contest! Elise McArley played particularly well and got a shout out from Stuart. Well done to everyone who took part in this event. Thanks to Ronan Kelly, Kirsten Bouras, Christina Toulis and Dave Mansfield for their support and management of teams.

Changing from summer to winter uniform occurs at the end of Term 1. Winter uniform is to be worn in Terms 2 and 3. This means that summer dresses will be replaced by white polo shirts and tunics. Shorts and skorts can continue to be worn, however may now be substituted for trousers. Students will also change from sandals to socks/tights and shoes.
Please advise the office if your child is in need of a new Polar Fleece so that adequate stock can be made available. Please note that (optional) beanies are also available for purchase for the winter months.
Ringworm
We have had a couple of cases of Ringworm within the school. Ringworm is a common skin infection caused by a fungus and not a worm and can appear almost anywhere on the body, arms, legs, feet, groin and scalp.
Ringworm is a flat, ring-shaped infection contracted by contact with infected skin, clothes, personal items or surfaces. If Ringworm is contracted on the scalp, it can cause round, painful red patches and may make hair fall out. What to do Check and clean skin everyday.
See your doctor if the ringworm is on your child's scalp as this needs to be treated with medicine. For ringworm on other parts of the body a public health nurse, pharmacist or doctor can show you which cream to use to kill the infection. Go to the doctor if your child has a fever, their skin becomes swollen, warm or leaking fluid.
Check other children for ringworm. Treat any animals or pets with ringworm. Children do not need to be excluded from school or childcare. However, skin contact should be avoided until the ringworm goes away.
