Kia ora Whānau
I hope you have liked the inspiration shared this week. Parvati, one of our seniors wrote and presented this poem to the class as an A.R.I.S.E challenge. I loved all the ideas but particularly the sentiment of ‘helping others grow to be the best that they can be’ as this is what we strive as a team to achieve. Well done Parvati!
The A.R.I.S.E challenges are a range of home/school learning challenges that Years 7 & 8 work through to achieve firstly their Bronze, the Silver, and ultimately their Gold badges. A number of students are using these challenges to explore and share their culture. For instance, Alina learned how to make German traditional sweet bread and then shared it with the class while explaining its traditions and origins. Parvati made coconut jelly which is a Malaysian dessert. She shared it with the class explaining that it is made out of coconut and was super slippery and wobbly. Parvati commented, “ I am sure everyone really liked the jelly as it is so good!”
At assembly last Friday we awarded the Bronze medal to Jamie, Alina, and Parvati, and the Silver to William. Mahi pai | Excellent work
Today we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension. Before he ascended Christ told the disciples to go out and spread the Good News. This is the mission of the Church and as such 2000 + years on we are being called to go out and spread the Good News - it is the way that we live our lives as t is how people encounter Christ today.
So what good news can your family spread this week?
Tēnā koutou katoa, nau mai haere mai!
A warm welcome to the newest members of our St. Anthony's School whānau—Hugo, Patrick, and Margaret, along with their families. We are blessed to have you join our school community, and we hope your journey with us will be filled with joy, growth, and cherished memories.
We understand that for families starting a new school can be both exciting and a little bit daunting. Please know at St Anthony’s we are here to help you feel settled and we want you to feel valued, included, and supported right from the start. We encourage you to connect with other parents, attend school events, and get involved in our school life. You are now an integral part of our St.Anthony's school community and your participation helps build our small school with a strong spirit!
Ngā mihi nui Andrew Pink
Our aroha and gratitude to Andrew Pink who has been an invaluable member of our St Anthony’s School Board and recently retired at the start of Term 2. You may know that Andrew and Nicolette have long been part of St Anthony’s since their son James (and later Shaun) started school in 2011 but did you know that Andrew has been a member of the Board since 2016, starting as a dedicated Parent Representative, and then accepting the positions of Deputy Chair in March 2017 and Chairperson in February 2018.
Andrew has helped shape our school's direction and created the innovative and positive learning environment that our children enjoy. He has been a true champion of maintaining the special character of St. Anthony's. His personal investment in our school community has been evident in every decision he has made, and we are very grateful for hours of service including many hands-on working bees!
Andrew, ngā mihi nui for your commitment, your inspiring leadership, and your tireless dedication to St. Anthony's. Noho ora mai to you, Nicolette, James and Shaun - you will always be a cherished part of our St. Anthony's family.
Our School Board
The Board is a group of parent and proprietor representatives plus the Principal and a staff representative who collectively represent the St Anthony’s School community. The Board oversees the governance of the school and is the employer of all staff in the school. We are responsible for setting the school's strategic direction in consultation with parents, staff and students, and for ensuring that our school provides a safe environment and quality education for all our students.
Everyone is welcome to attend our school board hui which are held twice a term at school. The next board hui starts at 6 pm on Tuesday, June 13.
Grants administrator vacancy
Are you keen to serve our school community and in a way that works for you? We are looking for a volunteer to take on the role of grants administrator. A grants administrator is someone who drafts and manages grant applications for our school.
Grants are made to schools from various trusts and organisations and are often targeted at particular activities such as cultural programmes or sporting activities or to support those in need. In the past, our school has had successful grants for building the senior school playground, astroturf, and camp costs.
This is a great opportunity for someone who’s wanting to support our school – the hours are limited, the timing is flexible and you will be supported by the Principal and Board. You will work with Denise and Mark to identify the need and potential grants, then write a compelling story for each grant application and complete and submit applications electronically. You will manage the correspondence with the grant funder (hopefully lots of successes and not too many rejections!). You’ll get support from the Board and others to do this role well. This could be a shared role if you wanted to team up.

St Anthony’s Centennial Celebrations - contributions please!
We are approaching a significant milestone in our history as this year is the 100th year of St Anthony’s School which opened in 1923. The Sisters of Mercy were invited to take charge of the school. The first teachers were Sister Euphrasia, Sister Stephanie, Sister Agnes and Sister Eulalie. Mercy Sisters taught at St Anthony’s School until 1977.
The Centennial committee is planning the celebration events for later this year (a Save the Date notice will be sent in the near future). We would love to get your contributions to commemorate our school’s century-long journey.
Here are a few ways you can contribute:
Design Ideas: Please send in your design ideas for the centennial memorabilia, whether it's for T-shirts, lapel pins, coffee mugs, or any other items you believe would be fitting for this special occasion.
Artwork and Symbolism: If you have artistic skills or ideas for artwork or symbols that represent the school's history, values, and achievements, we would love to see your creations. These could potentially be incorporated into the designs for our memorabilia.
Music: Music holds the power to evoke emotions, bring people together, and commemorate significant moments. Share your ideas, musical compositions, performance proposals, or any other suggestions you may have for our celebrations.
Cultural and historical contributions: We invite you to share photographs, stories, and memories from your time at St Anthony’s and cultural connections to the whenua on which St Anthony’s is built. These contributions will help us preserve our shared history and provide a greater understanding of our turangawaewae.
Let's make our centennial celebration a truly wonderful and inclusive experience by using our collective talent, passion, and creativity to honour our school's legacy and this amazing milestone.
Please reach out to Denise, principal@stants.school.nz to share your ideas and contributions and she will connect you to the right team.
Phases of the Moon art
This term, we are exploring space. For art, we thought it would be fun to each make 2 phases of the moon each on the correct dates for May to be like a cool Moon calendar! We all used compasses to create perfect circles before we coloured it in with pastels, to show the Moon’s light reflected from the Sun. Each phase was different, and I got to do the New Moon.

Life Education
On Tuesday we had our first session for Life Education. Our focus was showing empathy to others. We learned about our red brain and green brain. Green brain is the part of your brain that lets you think clearly and make good decisions, the red brain is about when you are stressed and are not thinking straight. We also had a session on Wednesday and we did some more about empathy and the six steps. They were notice, listen, imagine, kindness, understand and practice.

Miramar Rangers
On Mondays and Wednesdays, Miramar Rangers F.C come to our school to teach us very cool tricks and we play lots of Football games. I really like it because I know them and I play for their youth academy team. We played number football and lots more. My favourite part was when I scored and celebrated. I really appreciate the time that they put in for us. On Mondays Te Maunga would have Stu he is one of the coaches. On Wednesdays Te Moana(which is my class) would have Kale and Curtis.

This term we have started our Envirogroup spending our first session building our brand new rotating compost bin. We have some exciting ideas about how we can help our school to be part of a more sustainable future!
This week we have Subway as a lunch order option. Order envelopes should have come home this week but we do have spares in the office. Please note that you won't be able to pay online into the FOSA account for this one as it needs to be cash only for Subway to process the orders for us.
Also we are in need of some new volunteers to help with school lunches. If you are able to help for a couple of hours on a Friday just once a term that would be much appreciated. It is very straight forward to learn and your help will mean that we can keep offering school lunches to the students each fortnight. Please email Debbie at debanded65@outlook.com.

Are you a locally-connected Wellington woman who would like to get to know and be a friend with a woman from a former refugee background? Catholic Social Services and Changemakers Refugee Forum are growing the Womens’ Friendship Project with the next induction night on Tuesday 27 June 2023.
Pairs of women will then be introduced to each other and meet up once a week or fortnight for the next 6 months to share local experiences such as walks, gardening, and café and market visits. Every two months you are invited to attend a larger group gathering of everyone involved in the project. Often a natural friendship continues beyond the project. If you are interested, please contact Deirdre at d.meskill@wn.catholic.org.nz or call 021 2213944.
