Kia ora whānau
We had an excellent first week and we welcome Veadpotnin and her family’s return to St Anthony’s. It is wonderful to have her back. Some of our seniors hit the ground running with the Aquabot competition underway during the first week. A challenging competition in many respects but we were proud of both teams for their commitment and innovation shown throughout the competition. The Rusty Submarines were to be commended for their risk-taking attitude as they showed excellent innovation while Flippy Friends nailed the practical side of the competition and gained third place in the intermediate section - ka pai to you all! Thanks too, to the parents who supported their tamariki with the challenge as well as transporting and supervising. You were awesome!
Te Rongopai | Bible - How good is your knowledge?
This term our tamariki are exploring Te Rongopai | the bible and its importance in our lives.
We are learning about the structure and writers of this sacred book and how it can guide us.
So the question is ‘Why read it?’ Three good reasons, according to St Jerome are:-
- Reading Scripture helps us to pray better. Every one of us needs to pray better. Prayer is our lifeline to God and Scripture can help us to pray better.
- Scripture reminds us of God’s covenant. God made a promise to our forefathers in faith, the Jews. He told them, “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” Even though the Jews (like us!) did many things that should have destroyed that covenant, God’s promise is eternal. A covenant is unbreakable because it is God’s truth. Then, with the coming of Christ, we received a new covenant: “This is My Body and this is My Blood. Whoever eats and drinks of it shall have eternal life.” The Bible, from start to finish, is the story of God’s unbreakable promise to us. That’s pretty important.
- God’s Word keeps us grounded. It is very easy, in the midst of our sloppy, busy, stress-filled days, to lose touch with who we are: God’s children. Taking time to read Scripture every day keeps us grounded, and reminds us of who we are. Reading Scripture helps us to recall, every day, that Christ is with us – even in the sloppiness, the busyness, the stress.

"As We are most proud of coming third and having the chance to go to Auckland. The best thing we learned, as we drove the robot was that you can’t just go up, you have to go forward and up at the same time. The greatest challenge for us was the obstacle course because it took a long time.
We had fun because we got to compete in the Aquabot Competition."
We are most proud of the learning that we achieved during the Aquabots. We are also proud of our teamwork. As a team, we managed to build not one but two Aquabots. We ran into some issues but we persevered through the presentation. With the presentation, we are proud that we made it pretty aesthetic and additionally added a nice animation. We spent a lot of time on it, and we are very proud of it. We are proud of what we have achieved in this competition.
We are mainly proud of creating an Aquabot that didn’t work. We also learnt a lot, and it was different for each person. For Nikki, the thing she learnt was how pretty she could make a Google Slide. She searched up how to make it visually aesthetic and she learnt a lot. She made each of the words in the title a different picture. Then, she animated each one to make it go up. This would make the start of the presentation truly epic. Another thing that Nikki did was to make the slides gradient to make it even more visually pleasing. Joseph learnt how to design and engineer a robot, and it was HARD. noting Ethan learnt that he’s never going to do this again because he thinks of it to be too stressful and it requires much more components than he thought. But he worked hard with the challenge and was a great teammate. Ethan didn't really know what his greatest challenge was. Joseph’s greatest challenge was engineering the robot, and Nikki’s greatest challenge was the slideshow because she spent a lot of time on it, probably too much. But it was still really good.
Congratulations to you all!

Measles – what you need to know
Not enough New Zealanders are immunised against measles, which means there is a very high risk of an outbreak.
- The best protection against measles is two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine – free for all young people aged 18 and under in New Zealand and all adults over the age of 18 who are eligible for free New Zealand healthcare.
- The first symptoms of measles are fever, cough, runny nose and sore red eyes, followed by a red or dark pink rash typically starting on the face or behind the ears three days after the first symptoms before moving down the body. If you observe these symptoms, encourage parents and/or caregivers to contact their healthcare provider or Healthline on 0800 611 116 immediately.
