Naumai e te whānau o te kura St Anthony's Tēnā Koutou Katoa
Talofa Lava Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for your support with finding alternative care for your children yesterday while the Primary and Secondary Teachers and Principals went on strike. We all met at Civic Square and marched to Parliament together. It was a successful day showing unity across the sector.
Week 5 has been a very busy week with Samoan Language Week and Catholic Schools Day. The theme for Samoan Language Week is: ‘Lalaga le si’osi’omaga mo se lumana’i manuia’ - ‘Weave an environment for a better future’.
Thank you to Tala, Ethel, Laite and Marimatina for sharing your wonderful culture with us; we have learnt so much this week and have particularly enjoyed the dance, music and food! Thank you for spoiling us!

Catholic Schools Day is celebrated every three years and this was held on Tuesday 28 May. It is a day we celebrate and showcase who we are to our communities.
The theme for Catholic Schools Day was ‘Extending Christ’s Call: to love, to be, to do’ - ‘Kia rangiwhāwhātia tā te Karaiti karanga: kia aroha, kia tūturu, kia mahi’.
This theme aligns with our Catholic school’s commitment to serving the community, each other and those in need. Thank you to the teachers, especially our DRS Francesca von Lanthen for preparing excellent activities for our students to engage in on Tuesday.
As a school, we looked at the three aspects of Christ's call. Students looked at how we can love one another through the Greatest Commandment. To Do examined the story of The Good Samaritan and acted out role plays. To Be sessions were framed around the prayer, God Be In My Head and we discussed how we can be God in our world.

Have a wonderful rest of the week!
Manuia tele,
Jennifer Ioannou

Our Board is sad to say goodbye to members Kate Riddell and Amber Proudfoot who have worked for 6 and 3 years respectively as elected parent representatives on our Board. Amber and Kate have dedicated a huge amount of their time and energy to St Anthony’s as board members and we will miss their expertise and passion for our students’ education and wellbeing. We are very fortunate that Amber is going to continue providing her time and expertise to seek out grants for the school. And St Mary’s school is very fortunate that they got to snap up Kate as a board member for their school (where Kate’s daughter is a student).
The great news is that we are very lucky to welcome Miriama Williams to the Board as an elected parent representative. Miriama brings a wealth of expertise including board of trustee’s experience from St Catherine’s school in Kilbirnie. We also welcome back elected parent representatives Andrew Pink, Emma Blades, and George Bouras. Our proprietor’s representatives remain David Sullivan, Anne Dowden, and Mark Mulhern, as well as Helen Revill our Staff Representative. You can read more about our board members here http://www.stants.school.nz/
One of the main roles of Boards of Trustees is to support our staff to set and reach student achievement targets each year. In order to determine the targets for the year, our staff start with the curriculum level our students are currently performing at and then through a targeted approach determine an achievable (but stretch) curriculum level for them to reach by the end of the school year. The Board have agreed with the recommendation from staff of a stretch target of 88% of students to be at or above the expected curriculum level in reading, writing and maths by the end of this school year. The staff have carefully designed a programme of initiatives to enable our students to reach this target. These initiatives include targeted use of teacher aide time, carefully selected learning resources, and continuing to strengthen our home/school partnerships (for example encouraging families to read with their children to develop a sense of pleasure of reading together).
The Ascension of the Lord closed the Easter season and our liturgical year enters a new phase. Next Sunday is Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. Over the following two weeks our Sunday worship will be reminders of key elements in our Christian Faith: Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi. Trinity the nature of the God revealed by Jesus Christ: a Trinity of Persons to whom we give the names, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This belief discloses the Church as a Community – a People or a Family. We know that humans are social, oriented to connecting with one another. We need others in our life to become fully alive. Made in the image of God, our nature is a reflection of God as Trinity.
Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) emphasises the Eucharist, the Mass, Communion. The community is nourished by the Bread of Life which draws us ever closer into the life and mission of Jesus. These two festivals help identify us as Christian people. Our God is family-centred, calling us into a community sustained by the life-giving presence of Jesus. We witness this presence through our care of the world and one another.
National Young Leader's Day 2019
Our Year 8 students travelled to Porirua's Te Rauparaha Arena with Mrs Ioannou for NYLD (National Young Leader's Day) on Wednesday 22 May. The theme for the day was 'What is the food of a leader? It is conversations'.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our senior learners to listen and learn from inspirational speakers. They listened to guest speaker; Ronnie Taulafo from ‘What Now’, Hana Tapiata an ex NZ women's sevens player, and Dr Lehan Stemmet informed them about ‘What is the food of a leader?’ It is conversations/korero!
What makes an awesome leader is not being the most popular or having the loudest voice, it’s about being someone who takes the time to listen to and learn from others. Quotes that were shared and ones that students particularly loved were:
'Change is inevitable, growth is optional';
'Life is 10% what happens to you, 90% about how you respond';
'Good leaders don't talk, they listen.'
The event finished with a guest appearance of ‘Kings’ who sang to the crowd of excited leaders. Our Year 8s all said the day was inspirational, entertaining and a whole lot of fun!
Hoiho and Takahe Trip to Te Papa
On Monday 27 May Hoiho and Takahe Classes journeyed to Te Papa to explore the newly opened Te Taiao Nature exhibition and The Pacific Explorers exhibition. The 'weird and wonderful' creatures and exhibits proved to be a great source of wonder for our students.
In response to their learning, students had the opportunity to create their own 3D vaka (a pacific waka) in the Hinatore Learning Lab using the 3D design programme, Tinkercad.
We really appreciated the expertise of the Te Papa Hinatore learning Lab team and the support offered from our fantastic parent helpers Iota, Sarah, Anna, Sheryl, Amanda and Steve, thank you.
