It was wonderful to be part of the Confirmation mass last Sunday to see our young parishioners take their next step in their faith journey. Jesus no longer walks among us so instead his spirit, te Wairua Tapu will guide each one of us - this is what this sacrament is about. Cardinal John’s simple message to those being confirmed as well as all of us was - Be like Jesus and follow the gospels. Congratulations to Cedric, Emily, Bianca and Brea!
We have been blessed over the past few years with past pupils committing to St Anthony’s for their time of service. Pieta Proudfoot worked tirelessly last year, completing many jobs for the teachers after school each Wednesday, Fox Cobb spends each Friday with us and Maia Bouras comes in each weekend to sort and file our library books. We commend these young people for this service as our school certainly benefits. I ask you to support Maia’s other project at the moment (with her fellow Year 11s from St Catherines) which is collecting for Wellington City Mission Social Supermarket. See below for further information.
St Anthony was acknowledged in style last week, with a wonderful mass followed by a day of activity. The focus was for the children to discuss and further explore our school crest which is reflective of what was important to St Anthony - enjoy the thoughts by Te Ākau below as well as reminding yourselves about the various aspects of our school crest.
Gospel
GOSPEL
Jesus said to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is like this: a man
sowed seed across the paddocks. Then his life went on,
waking and sleeping, going the daily round and, while that
happened, the seed germinated and grew, the man didn’t
know how. For the earth brings forth growth: first, the
seed germinates, the shoots then lengthen, the ears appear
and then fill with grain. When the seed heads are fully
ripe, the man returns with his sickle. Harvest time has
come!’
He again said to them: ‘What is the Kingdom of God like?
What images can I use? It is like a tiny mustard seed,
which, when it is sown, is the smallest of all seeds. But
when it is sown, it germinates, shoots up and grows into a
large shrub shooting out many fine branches. Many birds
come and nest in its shade.’
Jesus continued to teach them using such images as they
could understand. In fact, he only taught them using such
images but when he was alone with the disciples he
explained the meaning to them. (Mark 4:26-34)

Chan Khong, a fourteen-year-old girl in Vietnam, wanted to help poor,
hungry children in the local slums. She began by going to her neighbors
and asking them to each put aside just three handfuls of rice a day for
the children. With this tiny beginning, she was able to develop a
program of care that, seven years later, involved ten thousand people
working in it. Chan Khong said, "Do not despise the small act. Every small
act, if you do it deeply, profoundly, can touch the whole universe.
Millions of small acts will build a wonderful world? Her wisdom offers
valuable impetus, especially if we think our tiny efforts do not make a
difference. Jesus told his followers something similar: the kingdom of
God grows through "the smallest of seeds." Those seeds are little acts
of great love. What in your life seems insignificant? Making breakfast
for someone? Taking ten minutes to listen? Making a phone call?
Changing a diaper? Opening a car door? One kind deed can make a big
difference. Look for the little things. Do the lithe things. They can
change our world.
Matariki
Our Matariki Celebration is planned for Thursday 1 July, (5:30 start with dinner at 6 pm) provided Wellington is out of level 2. Our tamariki are continuing to learn their kapa haka and look forward to performing it for you. Celebrating Matariki - the Māori New Year is an important event for our school and Board and we would love you all to attend. Please can you respond to the form we sent out yesterday to help us with catering.
Board of Trustee's vacancy
If you are interested in being a member of the St Anthony's school Board please get in touch with us (bot@stant.school.nz). We currently have a vacancy and would love an enthusiastic parent from the school community to join us. Your role would be to help provide strategic direction for the school and provide insight into how we can continuously improve and grow our school. The time commitment is small with 2 meetings a term. We'd love to hear from you if you are interested in giving back to the school community.
Nga mihi nui kia koutou.
On Tuesday 15th June we celebrated St Anthony’s Feast Day by coming together as a whole school for Mass followed by working in our Tuakana Teina Groups to learn about St Anthony and his life. We also created artworks which represent each section of our School Crest. We finished the day with a whole school Kahoot to help cement the learning we had done during the day.
Te Ākau wrote about our special day.
“On Tuesday we had St Anthony’s Day at School. We had to go to other classrooms. We did artwork for the whole crest! It was fun!” - Sam
“I loved the kahoot. Do you know why I loved the kahoot? Because it was all about St Anthony.” - Danny
“On Tuesday we had a kahoot. It was about St Anthony. We were with our Tuakanas. We went to the other teachers classes too.” – Sophia
“On St Anthony’s Day me and my friends made a dove. My dove was good.” – Marianne

On Sunday, me Emily Cedric and Brea had confirmation. We had to go to confirmation practice on Friday. When we got there we got given badges. For the real thing when the person called out our name, we had to say "Cardinal John I wish to be confirmed". When it was my go I was a little bit nervous. A while later we went up to Cardinal John and he spoke to us we had to say amen then he said peace be with you and we had to say and with your spirit. He put a special oil on our forehead. It smelt like citrus fruits. After everyone had gone we went up for a blessing. Me and Emily saw Miss Troy walking past.
After the Mass, we went down stairs to have some food. There was some cranberry juice. You had to bring some food. My mum brought some slice. My auntie gave me some gold feather earrings and some silver earrings and my nana got me an invisible pen and a packet of sticks that told you the story - I've done around 18. After confirmation, I went to my auntie's house because my sister had a gym competition. It was an excellent day.

On the weekend I went to my confirmation. I saw my cousins and my teacher miss Troy. I had to say Cardinal John I wish to be confirmed and I was embarrassed. After a while we had to do a thing when Cardinal John said something and I said amen and then he said peace be with you and with your spirit.
Then there was food downstairs. After the food we went to a cafe because the adults did not eat. At the cafe I got presents and there were 2 bags of chocolate,$10 and a necklace. Then I went home.
I smelled the stuff that Cardinal John put on my forehead. It smelt like lemon and orange and lime. It was a great day.

Traditional Dancing for World Refugee Day
On my weekend I went to Porirua. I went there because I had a Lao dance to do. It was world refugee day and a group of us did a Lao dance in traditional Lao dresses. I went to my cousins house for a quick practise and put my dress and make up on and had to do my hair as well. I took one of my cousins in my car. When I got there I had to wait till it was our turn. After our dance we got a goody bag because we did so good. My Mum bought me glue on nails and an ice cream.

Last week Helen Griffiths the author of Treasure Beyond Measure came St Anthony's to read her book to some of our students. The children loved listening to this great story which is full of collective nouns.

Collecting For Wellington City Mission's Social Supermarket
Kia Ora! We are a group of year eleven students at St Catherine's College who are collecting donations as part of a sociology assessment. This assessment focuses on a social action that contributes to a social justice issue, our chosen topic being poverty. Donations will be going to Wellington City Mission's Social Supermarket, which is a donation centre where customers can choose their own products, based on their needs and preferences.
It would be a big help if you could donate a few items, anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated! Donation ideas include: Pasta, Noodles, Rice, Beans, Cans, Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Baking Items (flour, sugar, milk powder). There is a box in the office where you can put these items until the end of next week.
Thank you!
