What a fortnight - one minute we are all gathering for assembly and then the disco and the next minute we are in Lockdown. Thanks to all the staff who gathered on Tuesday night to quickly get organised so that we could be ready for online learning yesterday. We are so impressed with all our whānau and tamariki as you have settled back into learning at home. With most of our tamariki on board we are enjoying some fantastic snapshots of learning
Some great science happening...
Some great physical exercise challenges...
and little brothers become weights...
and even a digital version created...
We are thrilled with viewing the learning and creativity - well-done team!
Congratulations to our Student Council and Te Maunga students for organising and leading a great disco last Friday night - they did a superb job and we thank them for all their efforts to ensure that the children were able to boogie away happily. Ka pai to those parents who supported them with this occasion- it was much appreciated.
Due to the uncertainty of how long we will be in Lockdown and because our grandparents mightn't want/ or can't travel at the moment we have made the decision to postpone our Grandparents' Mass and Morning until Wednesday, September 15 at 9:30. We pray we will all be back in the full swing of learning at school by then.
During the week of the Feast of the Assumption, we draw strength of Mary's complete faith in her son and remember words of scripture
We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. 2 Chronicles 20:12
Here's to a safe and happy time for all.
God Bless
Denise
HATA MARIA
Gospel
The following is the Gospel and reflection taken from our Liturgy during the week to celebrate the feast of the Assumption along with the rededication of New Zealand to Mary.
Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever." Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. (Luke 1: 39-56)
Reflection
Listening to the Gospel, we strive to rejoice with Mary, for whom the Lord has done great things. After a life of total trust in God and his mysterious will for her and her son, she now receives her reward.
Lord, as Mary Your Mother learnt to listen and trust in You, may we hear what You are saying to us in the things that happen everyday.
Distance Learning Experiments - Te Awa
Te Awa have been having fun continuing with our ‘Believe it or Not?’ experiments during distance learning! We have been making predictions and then trying out some different investigations to see what happens - lots of the results were very surprising!
Emily K gave the Floating Egg investigation a go. She noticed that the egg did not float in plain water but adding salt meant that it did!
Cedric says ‘This is my experiment for Lockdown 2021. I chose soy sauce, lemon, lemon juice, none, soapy water, vinegar, normal water and milk. So far, soy sauce is winning!’ It will be interesting to see which slice stays fresh for the longest!
Here is Bianca’s take on the Magic Milk experiment. The dish soap causes the colours to all blend together - how cool!
Luna tried out different liquids to see which would stop the apple from turning brown for the longest. She made some clever predictions while setting up her experiment.
We started online learning because New Zealand is in level 4 so St Anthonys has been doing online learning. Year 5’s have been learning about fractions and decimal points. In online learning you can video call your classmates, sometimes you can even call other people from other classes! You can also do work on seesaw for online learning. It's just exactly like school but just online. Sometimes it’s better because when you always need someone or something you can just remember that you're at home.
-Monica, Year 5
The lockdown was very sudden, but luckily, we were prepared for it because of wonderful online sources, such as Google Classroom, Hangouts, Seesaw, etc. On the first day of lockdown, school started at 11:00, and for the rest of the week, school starts at about 9:00. Thirty minutes after the start of the school, there will be a Google Meet, to check how everybody is going and what thrilling activities we are going to do next. Today, we did a Kahoot, and soon, we are going to do a science experiment. We have writing on Google Docs, reading and maths in Seesaw (sometimes reading on Google Docs), and inquiry and science experiments on Google Slides. Personally, I like lockdown because I don’t have to wake up early. Also, I get to choose which subject I do first, which is great because I love doing writing first. The negative about online learning is that I cannot be close to friends. It just isn’t the same on Hangouts or chat.
-Nikki, Year 5
Te Moana Īta have turned into scientists - we are testing our opinions to see if we believe our hypothesis or not. Our first experiment was an “Erupting Lemon.”
We put half a lemon, food colouring and baking soda into a bowl and the observed what happened. Our hypothesis was that the lemon would explode. While the lemon itself didn’t explode there was a chemical reaction between the baking soda and lemon juice which caused the lemon juice to fizz.
Our next experiment was mixing warm water with baking soda, sugar and salt to see which would create the best crystals. After mixing them we put them into individual cups and are waiting for the water to evaporate and for crystals to form. We can’t wait to see what it will look like when we return to school!

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro nōnā te ngahere, ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga nōnā te ao.

Have your say - St Anthony’s School 2022 to 2025 - Discussion group Thursday 16th Sept 2-4 pm
Our school’s strategic plan sets our direction and goals for our children’s education at St Anthony’s School. We are completing the 3-year plan at the end of 2021 and want to consider our direction and aims for 2022 to 2025.
We invite you (parents, caregivers, and members of the school community) to join a discussion group to identify key themes for our school’s strategic plan from 2022 to 2025. The discussion will be led by Mary Ely from ERO and along with parents, members of staff and Board members will join in the discussion.
Friends of St Anthony’s (FOSA) - Can you help, please?
It is time to let our long-standing members of FOSA have a break and a new committee formed. In particular, we need the lead and treasurer positions filled. We see this as a once-a-term meeting to plan with Denise and then sub-committees taking on one specific fundraiser for the upcoming term. We look forward to many putting up their hands for this small but vital task.
