It has been lovely to welcome back Helen Revill as our Creative this week to support our tamariki to create their mosaics. The week began with prayer and then it was into creative mode. After a term exploring the symbolism and their cultural heritage, the children have now worked on creating their mosaic tile to add to our mural and they are impressive - from age 5 to 13 they have shown their creative side and we are thrilled. As this sneak peek shows, what amazing tamariki we have - all have impressed and inspired us with their skill and creativity to design and make their individual mosaics.
We also hope you are able to join us for our Holy Week Liturgy on Holy Thursday next week at 2:15 pm. The children, inspired by Hilma af Klint will share the Passion of Christ through their abstract art - we definitely have some seriously creative thinkers in our school.
As the term draws to a close, we wish you all a happy Easter and look forward to seeing all those unwell, isolating, or traveling overseas at the moment returning safely to us for Term 2 when our focus will be exploring our bi-cultural heritage and the NZ Histories. I thank the many whānau who have supported us with both the working bees for the property, Friday lunches, and the messages of thanks and support. We are grateful.

Next Thursday, as is a tradition we end the term with a mufti day. This is optional of course but if mufti is worn then those tamariki are asked for a gold coin donation which goes to support those who are more vulnerable than ourselves. This term the funds raised will go to Caritas who are currently supporting Tonga and Ukraine. As Caritas says,
‘Catholic schools around the country have been doing amazing things to stand in solidarity and show incredible generosity towards both Tonga and Ukraine after recent events. Fundraising has enabled the Caritas teams within the respective countries to provide much-needed support to struggling families.’
With Palm Sunday, this week, Lent is drawing to an end and we enter Holy Week - a time when we remember all the events of Jesus’ last days on earth. Please join us for a short liturgy on Holy Thursday at 2:15 pm when our tamariki will lead us in prayer, song, and visual reflection.
Here are the times for Easter services:-
He rā whatiwhati kō | A day of hard work
What a difference a day (or three) makes. For those of us “Parsley Green” doubters, we are true converts! What a beautiful colour and a beautiful job of preparing and painting the front fence and gates in time for the mosaic magic which started earlier this week with Mrs. Revill (nau mai hoki mai Mrs. Revill!).
Well done to everyone involved in our working bee last Saturday. A special thank you to Steve O’Donovan for leading the painting team and for all the great work on getting the garden pruned and tidied.
Your mahi has resulted in an awesome canvas ready to be further transformed with our tamariki’s creativity. We appreciate your time, effort, and support.
You are invited to the School Board meeting on 17 May at 6 pm
The School Board oversees the governance of our school and sets the overall strategic direction for the school. The principal is the board's 'chief executive' and manages the day-to-day operations of the school in line with the board's direction and policies.
Our School Board meetings are scheduled for twice a term and we welcome parents, whanau, and our wider school community to attend the meetings. Our next meeting is Tuesday 17 May at 6pm.
Kua tae mai ra nga hararei. The holidays have arrived.
Well, we’re almost there…and what a term it’s been:- a wonderful start to the school year filled with awesome learning and beach safety, Pedal Ready, Kiwi Hoops, St Patrick’s Day, Art and Animation, mosaics and of course, Covid. Local and international events have also impacted our tamariki and whānau.
Stress touches everyone these days. Holidays can have an important role in breaking off the cycle of stress…taking time out to rest and recover and doing activities you enjoy are great ways to shrug off stress and refresh ourselves. Spending time in the great outdoors is always a great option.
If you’re up for a walk in the hills with amazing views over the south coast, check out the Tawatawa Reserve near Island Bay where the carved stone pouwhenua (land marker post) have recently been restored.
May God shower you with blessings, love, and peace this Easter. See you soon Term 2.
In Te Awa as part of our Ancient Civilisations inquiry we have been learning about Ancient Egypt. We learnt that the Ancient Egyptians used papyrus instead of paper, and they wrote using hieroglyphs.
In Te Awa we made papyrus. First we had to cut paper bags and then we glued the bag onto a plastic bag. Then we let it dry. Then we peeled it off. That was so satisfying. We got to write our names on it in hieroglyphs. That was so fun too. The process was very sticky!

A few weeks ago Te Awa made a papyrus in the classroom because we were learning about Ancient Egypt and how the Ancient Egyptians made it. We got glue, paper bags, a plastic bag and paint brushes. We cut the paper bags into strips. Then we put glue on the strips of paper. Then we put it on the paper bag. After that we waited for one day so when we got to school we could peel the plastic bag off from the bottom. Then we wrote our names in hieroglyphs and it was very tricky to do for me. My favourite part was writing my name because I didn't know how to do it and it was something new for me.

A few weeks ago Te Awa made papyrus. We used paper bags and cut them up into thick strips. Then we mixed water and glue together. We started to glue the cut paper onto plastic bags. Te Awa waited for the next day when it would be dry. Then we peeled it all off. We all learnt how to write our names in hieroglyphs. We made a piece of paper!
