What a great way to start the term, with a trip to Zealandia. Our tamariki and kaimahi|staff were buzzing on their return. An excellent provocation to begin our term focus on ‘Celebrating our Whenua.’ Special thanks to Penny Duncan for her efforts in organising this trip. Ka pai to all the awesome parents that accompanied us on this trip.
This week we had great delight in welcoming our new tamariki formally into our school and parish with the mass and pōwhiri. Well done to all our tamariki who led this special liturgy. On the note of our students excelling we are thrilled with the number of outside providers that are commenting on how wonderful our learners are, and how engaged and well-mannered they all are. So ka pai to all of you for raising such wonderful children. And also a huge thanks to everyone for responding so rapidly this morning regarding our drain issue - you are a fabulous community!
The First Communion for four of our tamariki - Emily, Bianca, Brea and Cedric is being held at the 5:30 mass at St Anthony’s on August 20 so keep this date in mind to come along and support them. Please also pray for these children as they take the next step in their faith journey.
Next week: It is a busy one...
We are delighted to host NED’s Mindset Mission, a live streaming event with a powerful message of:-
- Never give up
- Encourage others
- Do your best
Our school received this programme at no cost because another school community has paid it forward to us. Now it’s our turn—you can help by purchasing a NED-messaged yo-yo and accessories. A yo-yo is both a mindset tool and a tangible reminder of NED’s message. While learning to yo, children will make mistakes, try again, and improve. Please watch out for further information that will be sent out shortly.
Book Week:
We have our Book Fair all set up in the Investigation Space so pop in before and after school to see the range of books on sale. Also on Tuesday, the Student Council is looking forward to seeing the range of fictional characters arrive. They have planned and prepared for this exciting time.
Our FOSA team is gathering again this Monday and would love to welcome others to attend. The team ran a great fundraiser with our Quiz night and if you are happy to help out with the next one, please come along at 7:30 pm for the one-hour meeting.
Years 7 & 8 begin their Theatre Sports this Friday - a series of afternoons when we have an expert come in to take them for theatre sports and oral language experience. Ultimately this leads to our Oral Presentation Cup. Because of this commitment, we are moving our school assemblies to Tuesdays at 2:15 pm. We are trialling this day and welcome feedback.
Finally, we offer an amazing senior programme at St Anthony's for the intermediate years and will be showcasing this on Thursday, 18 August at 6 pm. We hope you will come along to see what is on offer.
Nga mihi

You Can’t Take It With You by Paul Skippen- Grapevine
While visiting castle ruins on a trip to Ireland, I was awestruck: Did the people who had built the crumbling walls all around me know that their toil, craftsmanship, and dreams would decay into nothingness? When the builders planned the placement of each stone and timber, did they picture how it would all pass into disuse?
A similar feeling used to overtake me when I rode my beloved bike around town as a child. There was an abandoned warehouse at the end of a neglected street, once owned by a wealthy, powerful family. They had been the talk of the town. Now they were a sketchy memory. Scandal, death, and time wore away almost every trace of their existence.
That still haunts me because it immediately calls to mind my own pointless quest to accumulate a “me” museum. Every purchase, significant or trite, compiled room by room, is destined for ashes and neglect. This dark thought brings fear. Then the light comes on. God speaks to my heart, reminding me that a healthy dose of reality-checking now can save me from a life lived in things. I am pulled back to authentic living in Christ.
Over the next few months, St Anthony’s School community has a most important job to do – to elect five community members to guide our school for the next three years.
Nominations are now open for the election of five parent representatives to the school board.
You can use the form below to nominate yourself or someone else in your community. We have nomination forms available in Te Reo Māori and some other languages. Please contact the returning officer if these are required.
Nominating yourself or someone else
If you are on the voting roll and eligible to vote, you can nominate yourself. Please remember to sign both parts of the form.
If you are nominating someone else, complete the nomination form and make sure it includes all the required contact details and signatures.
You can post, hand deliver (to the school office) or email the nomination form to the returning officer prue@pruekelly.nz.
Nominations close at noon on 10 August 2022 (please see our website or the email sent to you for more information about completing the nominaiton form).

Some excellent knowledge to support the learning this term...
Zero Waste with Lorraine
Wellington City Council is committed to helping children learn about sustainable resource use and understand their role as waste minimisers and so fund the Zero Waste Programme in Schools. Last term the Wellington City Council Waste Educator came in and told our school all about waste. Her name was Lorraine, and she was teaching us about waste/rubbish that is being used or thrown away from all around New Zealand, and even worldwide. She taught us about things like rubbish and recycling, and how good or bad we were at reusing, reducing, and recycling. Turns out New Zealand isn't really good at this, which is why Lorraine came in.
We learned what actually happens with the rubbish that is put in the landfill, and why it's important to recycle. She also told us how much Co2 is produced during the making of a product. Lorraine told us what lots of materials are made of like plastic is made from oil. She called them Papatuanuku’s taongas, so when we take them away, we need to recycle them or try to use less of them before they run out. She called these natural resources. These included trees, bauxite, iron sand, silica sand, and oil. We also learned what is and isn't compostable and recyclable. Using the new information we have, we can start recycling more items, reducing the amount of plastic or non-recyclable products, or reusing what we have because if we act now, we can stop the increasing amounts of pollution and rising temperatures.
This term our challenge is to work out how we will make changes to work towards Zero Waste.
